Software development projects seriously over-budget and deadlines frequently missed? Perhaps a blind spot on critical lifecycle support practices is responsible.

Why is it that so many software projects begin with such promise but soon result in missed deadlines? International and local experience shows that project 'wheelspin' frequently has its origins in failing to understand and implement the critical processes needed to support the software development function.This short course is designed to enable attendees to:

  • Identify the critical technical tasks applying to processes in the software development lifecycle.
  • Understand the role played by the critical project support and management processes.
  • Learn the secrets of a process component approach to deploying support and management processes on a software development project.

Objectives

This course:

  • Reviews the foundation for software lifecycle process management in terms of the international standards ISO/IEC 15504 and ISO/IEC 12207.
  • Explores the critical technical practices of the software design, documentation, software configuration management and project management.
  • Demonstrates how these processes work together in a virtuous cycle to deal with the primary causes of wasted and unproductive effort on a software project.

Course format

At least 65 per cent of the course time is spent on exploring the implementation of key processes in real life case studies. The remaining time is spent on presentation of various concepts.

ISO/IEC 12207 was first published on 1 August 1995 and was the first International Standard to provide a comprehensive set of life cycle processes, activities and tasks for software that is part of a larger system, and for stand alone software products and services. That International Standard was followed in November 2002 by ISO/IEC 15288 which addressed system life cycle processes. The ubiquity of the software meant that the software and its design processes should not be considered separately from those systems, but be considered as an integral part of the system and system design processes.
